Anne Berenge

Anne Berenge was born in Western Province of Kenya near the city of Webuye. She went to school at Soy D.E.B. school, and joined the polytechnique where she learned arts and crafts.

Anne currently is working with the HIV and AIDS women in Kawangware slums. Under the auspices of AMREF and PLAN International she has been teaching the women skills of arts and crafts for self reliance. She is a mother of three children.

A rare find in contemporary African painting style, Anne employs the old style of 'monotype'. This method is achieved by painting on a piece of glass. She then places a sheet of paper on the finished glass plate and using a roller, presses the paper onto the still-wet painting. The paper is then removed from the glass and let dry. The result is a wonderful blend of colors with an interesting lack of texture, almost like a print. The use of this technique is an example of Anne's quest to experiment with color and texture, as well as utilizing a method rarely seen in African paintings these days..
