Joseph Thiongo
 Born in 1967 in Uthiru, Kabete (Kenya),
Joseph Thiongo realized his talent for art at a very early age.
He studied at Uthiru Primary School
between 1974 and 1981. He completed his secondary education at Kabete High
School in 1985. It was here that his artistic skills were recognized by his
Geography teacher, after being impressed by his map drawing skills. His teacher
said, “Joseph, I hope you will be an artist”. And this is something he
never forgot.
He worked for the Coffee Board of Kenya
until 1990, during which time he got closer to appreciating the various local
landscape.
Since then Thiongo has painted mainly in
watercolor, capturing natural beauty of various Kenyan landscape.
Thiongo is 36 years old, married,
with two children.
Thiongo's paintings have been
around Nairobi for a long time though his popularity has only been on the rise
within the past year or so. We are happy to add him as an artist on this website
and know that his interesting combination of colors, along with his wonderful
eye for detailed animal depictions, will gain him international attention.
2 December '08 - Is it so? All of the Thiongos
have been sold? Indeed, it's true. But rest assured we will have more in stock
by the end January '09.

2 March 2008 - I have just added some new
paintings by Thiongo. I was out of Cheetahs and Kudus, but still have some
elephants. This guy is incredibly talented - Thiongo sometimes supplements his
income by giving private lessons.

29 September 2007 - I have added the three Thiongos below. These paintings were actually found in a wonderful little shop
on Biashara Street. Not many tourists pass through this street and the guy has a
ton of paintings - most of them older from when he had a very popular shop on
the other side of town. These Thiongos have a richer, darker, more penetrating
color scheme to them. I think they're really nice and represent an older Thiongo
style - though you'd be hard-pressed to recognize the difference.

2006- Four remain from an original seven added on 20 October 2005. Thiongo's
extraordinary talent and patience shines in these paintings which take up to
a week each to produce. The paper has to be at the right dampness, the mask
(to get the white in the painting, which is actually the paper itself), has
to be applied carefully, and then removed. Each step is meticulously taken
to produce a beautiful collage of colors that compliments the animals and
landscapes that are portrayed.
