Cyprian Adagi Ogambi

On a trip to Kenya I managed to find several more Ogambi paintings and the following biographical information:

Cyprian Ogambi, who was born in 1962 in the Nyanza Province, Siaya District, can trace his interest in art as far as nursery school days where his drawings of a car was selected as the best of term work. During his primary school days his friends also encouraged him to keep drawing. At Alliance High School, art was offered as a subject and it was here that Cyprian made his mind up to be an artist. The art teacher would organize visits to the various Nairobi art galleries, such as Gallery Watatu, to see works by contemporary Kenyan artists and this reinforced Ogambi's resolve to follow an artistic career. To this end he studied graphic design at the Kenya Polytechnic.

Ogambi's works can be found at various art galleries such as Gallery Watatu, Gallery 9 of Contemporary East African Art, Grand Regency's Rotisserie Restaurant, and The Collectors Den.

Below these paintings is a brief outline of some of the exhibitions that Ogambi has participated in, as well as additional information on his paintings.

Update - 29 October 2007: Ogambi rules the day! I sent 20 Ogambis to some friends who are opening an art gallery in Australia! But I didn't send them all! You will find some of the best Ogambis this website has ever seen in this latest addition. Ogambi's artwork has really matured over the course of a few years. Even me, I have gone from an, 'Ogambi's stuff is ok', to, 'Wow! This guy is really good!'-type of guy. I'm impressed with his progress and hope he continues to expand and diversify his subjects, as well a his fantastic control of imagery, color, and design.

One of Ogambi's paintings was selected and presented to his Excellency the President during the occasion marking the 60th anniversary of the National Museum of Keny

1992 - Arts Festival at the National Museum of Kenya
1994 - Arts Festival at the National Museum of Kenya
1995 - Solo Exhibition at the Nairobi Safari Club
1996 - Group exhibition at the Gallery of Contemporary East African Art
Solo exhibition at Tazama Art Gallery, Yaya Center
1998-2000 - Arts Festival at the National Museum of Kenya
Solo exhibition at the French Cultural Center
2001 - Present - Continuation of solo exhibitions and working on reaching the world with his art via the internet and private exhibitions in Europe.

From what I can tell about Ogambi, he wasn't on the Nairobi art scene, and then he was everywhere! Like a movie that floods every theater hoping for a good review, his paintings have flooded the galleries, and have been a hit from one end of Nairobi to the other.

Bright bold colors characterize his paintings of the Maasai. His tall subjects holding spears and balancing on spindly legs stand shoulder to shoulder, filling the entire canvas with color and texture. Simple as they are, they attract the eye and seem to embody a true visage of African art.

Repertoire - nice word!
